چکیده

Introduction: One of most common treatments of end-stage renal disease is peritoneal dialysis. Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is a complication in which the osmotic capacity of the peritoneal barrier is lost, due to infections or the irritating effect of dialysis solutions. This pathology has different clinical presentations, hence the need of different diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Objective: To present a series of three cases with encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis and different clinical pictures, using laparoscopy as the mainstay for diagnosis and treatment. Patients and methods: This work describes the clinical and imaging features of three patients. A systematic approach was utilized which included the delimitation of the affected zone, sterilization, collapse of the cavity, and change of dialysis mode until renal transplantation. Conclusions: Our work suggests that a laparoscopic approach to encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis can be very valuable for the diagnosis and treatment of this condition and controlled clinical trials are warranted to validate this observation. Time Is Not Always the Matter: An Instance of Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis Developing in a Patient on Peritoneal Dialysis for a Short Term.

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is an infrequent but serious complication that is observed mostly in patients on long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD). However it can occur after short-term PD, in association with "second hit" risk factors such as peritonitis, acute cessation of PD, or kidney transplantation with the use of calcineurin inhibitors. In our case, a young woman with second-hit...

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis: clinical significance and implications.

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a rare but serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). This review discusses the current understanding of the aetiology and pathogenesis of EPS, highlighting histological features which differentiate it from simple sclerosis of the peritoneal membrane which develops with time on PD. Diagnostic criteria are presented, including the role of imagin...

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis in paediatric peritoneal dialysis patients.

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a serious complication of chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD). In contrast to the adult population, there are few studies regarding EPS in paediatric CPD patients, and the majority of reported patients are from Japan. The aim of the present report is to define the incidence of EPS in our paediatric CPD patients and to describe the clinical and laborator...

Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis

Chronic peritoneal dialysis (PD) can be complicated by encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), a rare but the most severe complication associated with long-term PD. Morbidity and mortality are still high (range from 25% to 55%) especially in the first year after diagnosis. The international Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) defined EPS by clinical signs of abdominal pain, bowel obstructi...
